Stratocaster Tuners Look All the Same, Right? Not Quite.

If you’ve ever shopped for replacement tuners for a Stratocaster, you’ve probably looked at two sets and thought, they look virtually identical, surely they’ll fit.


Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

I look at guitar parts a little differently. Appearance tells you what family a part belongs to. Measurements tell you whether it actually fits.


Tuners are a perfect example. Two sets can both be chrome, six-in-line and described as “Strat-style,” yet have different hole requirements, bushes, mounting screws or post heights.

Get it wrong and the best-case scenario is that the new guitar tuners simply don’t fit. The worst case is unnecessarily drilling or modifying a perfectly good headstock.


So, if you're replacing the existing tuners on a guitar, there are a few things you should check first to make sure you get the best-fitting set.


1. Check the Hole Diameter

This is the first measurement I would take.

Most tuners used on electric and acoustic guitars are designed to fit headstock holes of approximately 8.8 mm or 10–10.5 mm.


Generally:

Around 8.8 mm Usually associated with vintage-style tuners using push-in bushes.

Around 10–10.5 mm Common with modern guitar tuners using screw-in bushes and washers.


That difference doesn't look like much until you're holding a tuner that won't go through the headstock.


If the tuner and hole sizes don't match, you may need to enlarge the holes or, in some situations, use conversion bushes.


My preference is always to establish what is already there before modifying anything.

A set of digital calipers makes this job much easier.


2. Check the Bushes

Next, look at how the tuner is secured from the front of the headstock.

There are two common arrangements.


Push-in bushes are separate from the tuner itself and are pressed tightly into the hole in the timber. They aren't screwed into the tuner body and are commonly found with vintage-style tuners.


Screw-in bushes have a threaded section and normally a washer. The bush screws directly into the tuner body and helps secure the tuner to the headstock.


Whenever possible, I recommend choosing replacement tuners that use the same type of bush as the existing tuners.


It generally makes installation much more straightforward and reduces the chance of having to modify the guitar.


3. Check the Screw Holes Carefully

This is where two tuners that look almost identical can suddenly become very different.


Some tuners use two mounting screws, while others use one.

A common two-hole format has a screw located at each end of the tuner housing. If you're replacing this style, matching that pattern can make installation relatively simple.


With single-screw tuners, however, pay particularly close attention to where that screw is located.


There are several common screw positions depending on the tuner manufacturer and design.

That means two tuners can have virtually identical housings, buttons and posts, but when you turn them over, the mounting screw is sitting in a completely different place.


If you choose a replacement with the same screw position, you may be able to reuse the existing hole.

Choose the wrong position and you'll probably need to drill a new mounting hole.

Check the product description and, importantly, look carefully at photographs of the back of the tuner before ordering.


4. Check the Tuner Post Height

Hole diameter isn't the only important measurement.

You should also check the height of the string posts.

Some tuner sets use six posts of the same height. Others are staggered, with progressively shorter posts toward the higher strings.


Staggered tuners can increase the break angle of the strings over the nut and may reduce or eliminate the need for some string trees.


So a tuner can fit perfectly into the headstock and still have a different post arrangement from the original set.


Before ordering, compare the new tuner's post height and configuration with what's already fitted to your guitar.


5. Don't Assume “Fits Stratocaster” Means It Fits Your  Stratocaster

This is probably the most important lesson.

There isn't one universal Strat tuner specification.


Different eras, manufacturers, models and countries of manufacture can use different tuner designs. Then there are aftermarket Strat-style guitars, replacement necks and guitars that previous owners have already modified.


So don't rely solely on a listing saying:

“Suitable for Stratocaster.”

Before replacing a set of tuners, I recommend checking these five things:

  1. Headstock hole diameter

  2. Push-in or screw-in bushes

  3. Number and position of mounting screws

  4. String-post height and whether they're staggered

  5. The dimensions and mounting layout of the existing tuner

  6. Take photographs of the front and back of the headstock as well. If you're trying to identify an unknown set of tuners later, those photographs can be extremely useful.


Measure First. Drill Last.

One of the easiest mistakes when replacing guitar hardware is assuming that because two parts look alike, they must be interchangeable.

With tuners, a millimetre here or a screw hole there can be the difference between a straightforward ten-minute installation and having to modify the guitar.

And once you've drilled a hole, you've drilled a hole.


So my approach is simple:


KNOW. MEASURE. MATCH.

Looks right doesn't mean fits right.

Before buying replacement tuners, spend five minutes measuring what you've already got. Your guitar's headstock will thank you for it. 🎸
